Frequently asked questions
Everything about the SailQuiz app — 2,800+ questions, five courses, offline study, and no account required.
The app
What is SailQuiz?
SailQuiz is a sailing exam prep app for iPhone, iPad, and Android. It teaches sailing theory through short quizzes — 2,800+ questions across five courses — with a clear explanation on every question, smart review that resurfaces what you miss, and full offline study.
Is SailQuiz free?
SailQuiz is free to download. The free plan includes one full quiz and three Daily Challenge rounds per day across every course, plus smart review, streaks, XP, and progress tracking. An optional Premium subscription removes the daily limits.
What does Premium include?
Premium unlocks unlimited quizzes and unlimited Daily Challenges across all 2,800+ questions. Spaced-repetition review, streaks, stats, the glossary, and course browsing are free for everyone. Premium is a subscription billed by Apple or Google.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no login, no sign-up, and no account. Your progress is stored privately on your device — SailQuiz never sees your name, email, or scores.
Does SailQuiz work offline?
Yes, fully. All courses, questions, explanations, and images ship inside the app. Only purchases, restoring purchases, and anonymous usage analytics need a connection.
Which devices are supported?
iPhone and iPad (iOS 15.1+, with a layout designed for both), Android phones and tablets, and Apple silicon Macs. The app supports dark mode and respects reduced-motion settings.
Studying & content
What can I study?
Five courses: Sailing Foundations (beginner terms and basics), Basic Keelboat Theory (US-oriented fundamentals), Day Skipper Theory (COLREGS, tides, chartwork, buoyage, lights and shapes), Marine Radio SRC (VHF, DSC, MAYDAY, GMDSS), and Kitesurfing Foundations — 58 modules in total.
How does smart review work?
SailQuiz schedules each question you answer using spaced repetition: questions you miss come back sooner, and questions you know keep moving further out. You spend your time on what you haven't mastered yet instead of re-reading what you already know.
Are there visual questions?
Yes — 85 questions include illustrations of buoys, navigation lights and shapes, chart details, and boat handling situations, because recognizing them is exactly what exams (and real sailing) demand.
Is SailQuiz an official ASA, US Sailing, or RYA course?
No. SailQuiz is an independent study aid. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or accredited by the ASA, US Sailing, the RYA, the USCG, or any other certifying body, and it does not replace their official training or examinations. It covers the same theory those programs teach, so it works well alongside them.
Does it replace sailing lessons?
No. SailQuiz handles the theory so your time on the water counts. Practical skills — helming, trimming, docking under power — need a boat and an instructor.
What language is the app in?
SailQuiz is currently available in English.
Progress & privacy
Where is my progress stored?
On your device. Quiz results, mastery, streaks, XP, and your review schedule are all local — nothing is uploaded, and there's no account to sync. Deleting the app deletes progress; your Premium subscription can always be restored through your Apple or Google account.
What data does SailQuiz collect?
A small set of anonymous product analytics (like onboarding steps and purchases completed) plus subscription status. No name, no email, no quiz answers, no location. See the Privacy Policy for details.
